2 Way Radios Rule

July 29th, 2010

Jay is the manager of our tech support department and is my oldest son. Jay is gifted in everything mechanical whether it is building electric guitars and basses or working on automobiles and motorcycles.

Jay is forever shopping on Craigslist or eBay for his next project. Recently he traded some work for a chainsaw. He traded the chainsaw for a motor scooter. He traded the motor scooter for an old MG Midget that did not run. (In our politically correct world I doubt that we will ever have another automobile with the moniker “Midget”.)

He got the MG Midget running and promptly traded up for an MGB that need a paint job. The MGB was painted and traded for a motorcycle which was traded for some parts that became a custom electric bass which was traded for another motorcycle that was traded for his latest acquisition a large body Mercedes Benz Diesel automobile.

I am Jay’s wheelman in many of these adventures. We drive to some remote location (because Jay never trades for anything that is just down the street) to pick up his next “deal.” Then I follow him home while he drives a car with either no windshield, errant brakes or a hood that has to be wired to stay in the down position. Sometimes we do not learn that the vehicle is currently being used as a chicken coup or is totally infested with ants until we arrive to arrange transport. However, it seems all genuine bargains are picked up after dark or a minimum of 30 miles from home.

Here’s the irony: these situations are perfect for using 2 way radios and we are 2 way radio dealers and we always forget to bring a pair of radios from the office. Instead we use our cell phones. Cell phones are terrible for this use. The great benefit to using radio is the immediacy and ease of use.

Think about Jay and me on a dark highway at night. Instead of  fumbling around with dialing cell phone numbers etc we could have just pushed the talk button and reported in. No dialing, or redialing, or poor reception, or the battery dying, or even having to hold the cell phone by our ear in order to hear.

‘2 way radios rule’ in the right situation. Give us a call and we will help you determine if 2 way radios are right for you.

Do You Know About Golf Scrambles?

July 21st, 2010

“The Scramble” is a great way to for golfers of various abilities to participate in a tournament. Usually players are divided into foursomes. Each foursome competes against the other foursomes. It is a team competition.

In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players in that foursome play their second shot from that spot. The best of the second shots is selected. Then all the players in that foursome play their third shot from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.

Now here is the part that is fascinating: any foursome, comprised of 4 terrible golfers, might break the course record for low score. Let me say that again: 4 guys that when playing under conventional rules don’t expect to individually break 100 are able to score at par or below when they play as a team and choose best ball on each shot.

This is perhaps the greatest testimonial for team work ever. In basketball they say “good  teams beat great players every time.”

I think it is also true in business (or any endeavor). There is almost nothing that a group of people, dedicated to the same results, can not accomplish. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill seems an insurmountable problem. Correcting the US economic ills seem unsolvable. Unemployment, health issues, reliable affordable alternative energy and on and on are all issues of today that we can’t seem to find answers. I believe we will find answers. I believe through team work at every level of our communities and neighborhoods we will win.

When we surrender to the best ball, best idea, best interest of a group we will always exceed what we can do as individuals.

Stormy Weather

June 9th, 2010

It is the beginning of hurricane season here in Florida. Tornados are ripping through the midwest. Most every part of the country experiences storms during this time of year. It is storm season.

Two way radios are a great way to increase safety and efficiency by providing seamless communications even during the most severe weather.

Electrical service may be interrupted during storms but you can still depend on reliable and affordable 2 way radios with a little planning.

Here are 3 things that can help you be prepared;

1. Have spare batteries ready on standby. You can rotate spare batteries by using one battery while re-charging a second battery in the radio charger.
2. If the computers in your office are equipped with Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS) you can use these devices to re-charge your batteries. Simply plug your radio charger into the back of the UPS. You can expect 3 or 4 days supply using the UPS.
3. Some radios will allow the use of a special case that accommodates AA batteries. Keep in mind the radio’s broadcast power and range may be reduced by half when you are using AA batteries rather than the regular battery pack. However AA alkaline batteries have a long shelf life (several years).

There are several small generators and battery pack re-chargers that can be used to keep your radios operating for extended periods.

The most important thing is to have a plan and communicate that plan to everyone on your staff that uses 2 way radios.

My Cousin Enzo

May 27th, 2010

I have made a practice of not offering my political opinion in my place of business. I don’t want to alienate anyone because we have political differences.

My  cousin Enzo is always sending me entertaining emails. Some of the emails he sends are funny and some are serious. The serious emails tend to be political in nature. Some times they are simply patriotic prose. Enzo recently sent the following email. I hope you are touched by it.

“You probably missed this in the rush of news, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper, an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is . So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!)

‘An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish , Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian , or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in   Afghanistan . The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion.. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness..

An American is generous.. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!

As of the morning of September  11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.

The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America.

Some of them were work ing in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11 , 2001 earning a better life for their families… It’s been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo , and Stalin , and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world.. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself . Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.”

Enzo asked me to keep this one going. He said “Pass this around the world.” For once I’m going to listen to Enzo.

2 Way Radio Range

April 20th, 2010

You may have seen radios at a discount store or the local sporting goods store that advertise two way radios with a range of 10, 20 or even more miles. This is purely bogus. If bogus sounds too harsh to you…just ask the seller to demonstrate the advertised two way radio range. He will not be able to do it.

Two way radio range is determined by three factors:
1. Frequency
2. Power (wattage)
3. Obstacles
Frequency refers to VHF (very high frequency) or UHF (ultra high frequency). Radios operating in the VHF band travel the furthest but have little penetrating ability. Radios operating in the UHF band do not travel quite as far but have greater ability to penetrate buildings and forests.
Commercial grade hand held two way radios are limited to no more than 5 watts of power. Some radios have as little as a quarter or a half a watt. This is usually expresses as milli watts…250 mWatts or 500 mWatts. The greater the wattage the greater the two way radio range.
Obstacles include any solid object like building and hills or other radio waves or electrical interference.

A good rule of thumb for determining two way radio range is 1 watt of power will provide 1 mile of coverage in an open area. By doubling the wattage the two way radio range is increased by one third. For example a two watt radio should provide about one and a third miles of coverage. A four watt radio should provide about 2 miles of two way radio range.

Two way radio range can be increased with the use of a better antenna, a repeater or more power. Call us and we can help you find the best 2 way radio equipment for your application.

Telephone Greetings

April 9th, 2010

Here at 2 Way Radio Express we spend a lot of time on the phone. Besides answering the phone we make a bunch of out bound calls everyday. We are forever trying to make the world a better place one 2 way radio at a time.

It amazes us how many businesses don’t know how to answer the phone. For example, “Good morning. This is the Acme Manufacturing Company home of the big whoop. This is Moe speaking. How may I help you.” Too much. I’ve got to say you can help me by shortening your greeting. No one wants to hear all that. It is even worse when we get disconnected and have to call back and listen to it all over again. Mercifully the people that recited the greeting are just as tried of it and say it really fast so no one can understand them anyway. It sounds like “MmmmmHhhhCoCoCoblurdayblue help you.”

Voice mail isn’t any better. Voice mail greetings seem to fall into one of two categories. The first category is the airline greeting. The airline greeting is delivered in the same monotone as that used by a 30,000 plus hour US Air pilot. Think, “Good morning ladies and gentlemen and thank you for calling US Air. I have step away from the cockpit or I am temporarily on the radio. Your call is important to me. Please leave a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible and thanks again for calling US Air.” Too much.

The second category of voice message is the “have a good day” message. Years ago this voice message concluded with “have a good day.” Then the message’s conclusion morphed into “have a super day.” Variations include, have a fabulous day, have a blessed day, have a wonderful day and on and on. Sometimes combinations are used producing “have a wonderful, blessed day” or a “super fabulous day.” Unfortunately, all these good wishes do little to improve anyone’s day.

I like more direct telephone communications. I just want to call and say, “Wanna buy some 2 way radios?” Then I’d like to hear them say, “Sure. Who wouldn’t. Send us a dozen.” Then I’d say, “Thanks from 2 Way Radio Express. You have made my day.”

Go Blog Your Heart Out

March 23rd, 2010

The word “blog” is a contraction of the two words “web” and “log.” A blog is a website or page on a website with regular entries that typically deal with a given subject. For example the blog you are reading right now has regular entries that deal with two way radios or perhaps how I feel about two way radios or what a guy like me that is in the two way radio business had for breakfast this morning.

Blogs have actually evolved into tools that are used for attracting people to a web site. When you search on a term, the search engine you are using is looking for the closest match to whatever it is you are searching on. For example you are looking for 2 way radios (Hooray!).  “2 way radios” are the keywords. The search engine looks for websites that have the keywords “2 way radios.” If it finds a site that mentions “2 way radios” ten times it will list that site before it lists the site that mentions “2 way radios” only nine times. Companies use blogs to insert their keywords a billion times and try to gain attention. There is more to it than just the number of times something is mentioned but I’m sure you get the idea.

Unfortunately blogs and websites have become so addicted to inserting keywords that the over all meaning of the website is lost in the jungle of keyword insertions. They are more interested in saying “2 way radios, 2 way radios, 2 way…..” than saying anything that makes sense. It is like web world has gone search engine optimization crazy.

Do you watch college basketball on TV? Bill Raftery is a college basketball announcer that is prone to outbursts every 5 or 6 minutes. You might be watching the game and suddenly Raftery screams, “KENTUCKY IS GOING MAN TO MAN.” The level of his outburst never seems to be in proportion to what you are watching on the screen. It is as if someone told Raftery that he needs to scream every 5 minutes regardless of what is happening on the court. “SYRACUSE IS TAKING A TIME OUT.” Raftery is really out of control.   He reminds me of George Costanza’s father on Seinfeld. In what appears to be a hormone imbalance Frank Costanza becomes very quick to anger over fairly meaningless issues. For example, Frank and George may be having a docile conversation and Frank suddenly screams, “WE ARE NOT HAVING TURKEY THIS THANKSGIVING.” Frank is over the top.

Today’s blogs are like listening to Bill Raftery call a basketball game or watching Frank Costanza on Seinfeld. Blogs are no longer about a given subject they are only opportunities for keyword outbursts.

I’m Scared

March 4th, 2010

I’ll be honest with you, I am scared. I am sacred that all of our manufacturing jobs are going overseas. More specifically too many of our manufacturing jobs are going to China, Malaysia and to other countries that do not have the same concerns as we do.

I do not think the Chinese care one whit about human rights or the environment or for that matter anything beside the self interest of their government. Our concerns for the well being of our citizens, fairness in the world and protecting our planet are of no concern to the Chinese.

I do not mean to pick on the Chinese because there are other countries that behave the same way however China is a major trading partner with the USA.

Here at 2 Way Radio Express we have made an effort not to sell Chinese goods. Sometimes we simply do not have a choice as the only source for a product is China but if we have any choice at all we buy non Chinese radios, accessories and batteries.

This is not just a political statement. We find most of the stuff that is made in China is junk or at the very best undependable and unreliable.

We find North American, Japanese, Korean and European made goods to be far superior. Goods and products from these countries operate better and last longer. Goods from these countries are consistent in quality and durability.

Just as important we feel we are competing on a level playing field. The Japanese, Koreans and Europeans treat their workers with dignity and pay them a fair and reasonable wage. They share our values regarding people and the environment.

On a level playing field America can compete with everyone.

I am not here to stand on a soap box and bore you with my opinions but I do want to share my thinking with you so you will know who we are and how we do business.

Manzie

Digital Radio

February 15th, 2010

In the early 1980’s personal computers were becoming more and more available. An IBM PC/XT cost nearly $10,000 at that time but businesses of all kinds were buying them.

Do you remember secretaries? Secretaries did most of the typing and filing and administrative tasks in every office.

When the IBM PC/XT first appeared people thought it was a swell machine but didn’t really understand its significance until various applications became available.

As soon as word processing, accounting and simplified customer record keeping programs were developed you could kiss your secretary good bye.

As expensive as the early computers were they cost less than having a secretary. The good news was secretaries didn’t lose their jobs. Computers made them more efficient and more valuable. Secretaries became admins and expanded their responsibilities and capabilities.

We are on the verge of a similar phenomenon: the introduction of the digital 2 way radio. Digital 2 way radios cost about twice as much as a regular analog 2 way radio.

Two way radios have been used mostly for just talking. Push the button and talk. Let go of the button and listen.

Digital radios talk. Digital radios talk about 20% further than regular analog radios. Digital radios also make it easier to call everyone at once or just one person at a time. In addition to talking, digital two way radios track and text. Digital radios can be equipped with GPS tracking and texting features.

The real story here is that digital 2 way radios are like computers in that it is not the computer that is the big story. It is the applications or programming that is the big story.

Programming that is specific to various business applications are being developed for digital 2 way radios. These applications will be for nursing homes, factories, schools and many other places of business, education and industry. These applications will make  workers more productive, safer and more efficient. Once you see what a digital radio can do the additional cost will be meaningless.

The future of 2 way radios is digital. If you want to talk digitally give us a call.

Trending Now

February 2nd, 2010

Do you ever notice the “trending now” column on Yahoo? Trending Now shows a list of the most popular searches. For example this morning’s list:

Trending Now

  1. Groundhog Day
  2. Razzies
  3. Melissa Joan Hart
  4. Joe Mauer
  5. Star Trek Online
  6. Missile Defense
  7. Mo’Nique
  8. Avatar
  9. Lost
  10. Kristen Stewart

Look, I’ll be honest with you. I only know five of these items, the other five  I don’t have a clue. I should add that I may be interpreting the item “Lost” in a manner different from what people may be searching on. So maybe I really only know 4 of the items.

Shouldn’t there be more consistency in these searches? For example, people are searching on “Groundhog Day.”  When you get to the results of this search there are all kinds of pages that mention the movie Groundhogs Day, the cast of characters from the movie, Punxsutawney (ground zero for groundhogs), other festivals and historic dates, books about Groundhogs Day, etc. So with all this groundhog stuff in front of you doesn’t it make sense you would click on something related? Even things that are unrelated like prairie dogs, hot dogs and Valentines Day are likely targets for additional hits. But none of these things show up in the Trending Now column.

If you search on “2 way radios” (I’m guessing there is little chance that Yahoo is going to show “2 way radios” in their Trending Now even though 2 way radio dealers all over the country are hoping and praying that they will) you will get all kinds of related searches: 2 way radios, 2 way radio accessories, 2 way radio batteries, 2 way chili, 2 way street and so on.

Do you think the Trending Now column is being manipulated?

Manzie
