I Am On A Diet

Monday, June 15th, 2015

Hi Friends,

I am on diet. I weight 40 pounds more today than I did when I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1971. I have gained about a pound per year. I admit I was a pretty skinny guy back in 1971 but not 40 pounds skinny.

I have exercised most everyday for the past 40 years. I don’t drink soda and seldom eat fast food or junk food. If I eat potato chips they are only the highest quality potatoes cooked in some kind of special low fat oil and salted with the most expensive sea salt. (note: You can see how I have rationalized myself right into a 44 wide jacket.)

So last Sunday I began what I am referring to as the “get back to the original size Manzie” diet. It can also be referred to as the “no beer or wine till you can see your feet” diet.

I don’t think I will be able to lose 40 pounds but if I can lose 20 pounds I will be thrilled. The problem is I enjoy eating. I enjoy cooking. I enjoy hanging around the grocery store. They know me by name at Publix’s deli.

I believed my friend Lewis when he said, “It is difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.” This is particularly true when the homegrown tomato is buried in a BLT or part of a pizza.

So for the past week I have been eating mostly fruits, vegetables and an occasional hard boiled egg. By my calculations I am operating on about 1000 – 1500 calories a day. After the first day I weighed one pound more. By the third day my weight had spiked an additional 3 pounds.

The ever insightful Joy Ann informed me that my metabolism was trying to protect me from my dieting. She said this while she was eating a bite of sweet potato topped with a generous portion of butter. (Of course little miss sweet potato isn’t over weight.)

Did you know that fruits and vegetables can make you irritable?

The Best Advice

Monday, June 1st, 2015

Hi Friends,

My granddaughter is graduating from high school this week. So I am looking for a graduation card that convenes the pride and hopefulness I feel for her.

Most of the cards are too sappy or too silly. The best cards seem to be the ones with the briefest message and plenty of room for me to hand write my own tidings.

I am thinking my message should be advice from my senior perspective on life. I graduated from high school in 1965, that’s 50 years ago. I guess I’ve learned a thing or two I can pass on in the form of grandfatherly advice.

Most of the advice that comes to my mind comes from movies:

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” from Forest Grump.

“The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it” from the Lion King.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

“Get busy living or get busy dying.” from Shawshank Redemption.

I’ll be honest with you, none of these quotes seem appropriate for my tender and beautiful 18 year old granddaughter.

I am not going to quote a movie. Instead I think I’ll share with her the best advice I ever got.

When I was just a boy someone told me, “keep your eye on the ball.”  They told me this because I was wildly swatting my bat at apparently nothing. “Keep your eye on the ball” is great advice.

I am going to write, “My advice to you is keep your eye on the ball. But first make sure you know what is the ball.”

Can we offer you advice on the best 2 way radio equipment for your budget and application. Give us a call today. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.
