Advertising 101

There are 2 new trends in advertising. Traditionally there have been only 2 basic types of advertising: disruptive and non disruptive.

Advertisements in the newspaper or in a magazine are non disruptive. The advertisement is obvious but it does not interrupt or disrupt you from reading the paper or magazine article. Highway billboard signs are suppose to be non disruptive.  However, while not disruptive, in some instances billboards are distracting.

Television ads are disruptive. They are disruptive because when you are watching a television program the program is interrupted by an advertisement. The point of the ad is to disrupt your attention from the program and have you instead focus on the advertisement. Pop up ads on some web sites are also examples of disruptive advertising.

The 2 new trends in advertising are annoying and persistent. The annoying ads feature spokespeople like Rod Blagojevich. Blago is the impeached former governor of Illinois and convicted felon.

Blago is currently advertising Paramount Farms pistachios. It is annoying to think that Blago is earning big bucks from his misdeeds. If you are like many folks you may be saying ‘I’ll go hungry before I buy a single nut from Paramount or Rod Blagojevich.‘ I don’t think annoying ads work.

Persistent advertisements are ads that you can not get rid off. Persistent ads might be repetitive phrases like “Head on! Apply directly to the forehead! Head on! Apply directly to the forehead!” After you hear this ad it is irritatingly difficult to stop hearing it replayed in your head. Persistent ads also include internet advertisements that pop up on your screen and play for 15 to 30 seconds. The whole time the ad is playing you are frantically looking for the spot to close the window. These ads usually have a hidden close button so the ad persists in making you mad. I don’t think persistent ads work.

Here at 2 Way Radio Express we do not have annoying spokespeople or bothersome internet ads that won’t close. We do not use disruptive tactics.
