My mother’s father, my grandfather, came to this country from Italy. I don’t think he had two nickels to rub together when he landed on Ellis Island. He was a hard worker, had a great sense of humor and loved everyone he met.
He became an entrepreneur and the first general contractor in the state of Maine. He did quite well for himself and made a boatload of money. Hooray! My grandfather indulged himself and his American pride by buying every new appliance that was introduced. I think his family was the first in his town to have a refrigerator, a toaster, washing machine, radio and anything else that ran on electricity and could be bought locally. Some of these inventions are now available in every home. Some of the early appliances faded away. Home dry cleaning has never caught on. Home bread making, home haircuts and do it yourself auto painting have been hit or miss over the years.
I guess it is because of cable TV and the abundance of shows to advertise on we are forever being introduced to new products. Showtime Professional Rotisserie, Sticky Buddy and electric shock belts to help you lose weight while you relax are a few of the current inventions being introduced to the public. Some of this stuff catches on and becomes very popular. Others not so much.
My mother, God rest her soul, inherited her father’s fascination of new gadgets. My mom loved to order stuff off TV. She could watch the Home Shopping Channel all day. Most of the things she bought she either returned or never used. It was cheap entertainment and less harmful than a lot of others things she might have done for thrills.
Most recently, the MicroWave Egg Cooker, one of my mother’s TV finds has been discovered and past down to my granddaughter. I guess the attraction to this type thing skips generations.
Callie is a freshman in high school and is using the MicroWave Egg Cooker everyday. Sometimes more than once a day. She not only loves eggs she loves to prepare them in her newly inherited MicroWave Egg Cooker.

Saturday is a slow day for me. My industrious Joy Ann goes to work on Saturday mornings. The choral has practice and there are always a lot of details that she oversees. I usually spend Saturday morning on an extended bicycle ride or beach walk.
We don’t keep regular office hours on Saturday and Sunday. Modern technology lets me receive all of our office on my cell phone. We answer our phone from 8 in the morning until 8 at night 7 days a week. We are very available. Even on my bike or the beach I am on duty.
I split the calls with Grayson. Somedays he takes the after hour calls and some days it is me. When either of us calls the other to announce we are putting the phone on call forwarding we say, “You’ve got the con.” “You’ve got the con” is from Star Trek.
When you command a large ship you have to fool the ship into going where you want it to go. Waves, currents, the wind and the ship itself are all influencing the path of the ship. A good captain has to trick or fool or better yet “con” the ship into performing correctly. I don’t know if this is why the term “con” is used or if it is short for control. I guess either way, that is what con means; to control.
A few months ago I was riding my bicycle when my cell phone rang. I have a different ring tone for Joy Ann, my children, the office and so on. I was coming up on an intersection and couldn’t stop but I knew it was the office calling. I retrieved the phone from my pocket and unfortunately it slipped from my hand and fell to the street. It took the fall pretty well. I really thought it was okay until the car that was behind drove over it. The sound of a car tire rolling over a $500 iphone is unmistakeable.
If it had been a 2 way radio it probably would have survived. Two way radios are exceptionally durable. One of our featured radios is the TecNet TP-8000. If you visit this link CLICK HERE and click “Click here to watch a video” you will see a pretty Swedish girl demonstrating all the perils that a 2 way radio can survive.

One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes was the one where Kramer tries to return a peach and ultimately gets barred from the local fruit stand. Kramer doesn’t want to pay for the fruit because it doesn’t taste good. The fruit stand operators tells Kramer he can’t be responsible for the taste. The bottom line is the unreliable nature of fruit.
There is a Fresh Market across the street from our office. I buy all our fresh produce and especially fruit there. The health conscious Joy Ann insist on fresh fruit everyday. Fresh Market is consistently reliable. They charge a little more but it is well worth the price.
The Fresh Market is where I first learned about SweeTango apples. SweeTango apples were developed at the University of Minnesota by crossing Honeycrisp and Zestar apples. SweeTango apples are crunchy, sweet, juicy and have terrific favor. SweeTangos are the best apple I have ever eaten. It not just me, everyone in the office and everywhere else says the same thing. SweeTango apples are reliably delicious.
When I was in college my friend, Jerry Richardson, was perpetually trying to lose weight. He was forever going on single food diets. He could be seen walking across campus with a bag of grapefruit or apples or whatever other single food diet he was on. Jerry never really lost any weight because he would tire of eating just grapefruit or oatmeal long before any weight was lost. In other words one can only eat so much grapefruit.
Not so with the SweeTango. The growers of this fabulous fruit are part of a co-op. It is almost a franchise. One grower said that he didn’t think he was competing with other fruit growers. He felt like he was in competition with Frito Lay and other snack food producers. He said his 10 year old son preferred a SweeTango over a Snickers bar.
Had the SweeTango been available back in the day Jerry might have been skinny little guy. It is great when a product is a game changer.

We recently leased a new Volkswagen Passat. Our last car was a big body Mercedes S class super duper deluxe mega sedan. It was a terrific car. It was the quietest car I have ever rode in. It was the biggest car I’ve ever rode in. But to be honest, we lived in fear that something would break and the cost of repair would be more than the value of the car. In the end someone else wanted to take the risk more than we did and we sold it to them.
After we watched the Mercedes quietly drive away we rented a car for a few days while we searched for our new car. The thing I love about the internet is the ability to shop, research and compare without leaving my chair. Car dealerships are notorious for being the worst shopping experience. I won’t recount all the things I don’t like about car buying because I don’t want to dredge up those images for either you or me. I’ll just say that on average it is faster to close the deal on a house than on a car.
So I’m sniffing around the internet looking at new models from Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Ford and others. My son Jay tells me, “Get a real car, check out the new VDubs.” Jay is on his second Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Diesel Sports Wagon and has owned several Volkswagen Beetles as well.
From www.edmunds.com I clicked on www.vw.com and from there I find our local VW dealership at www.vwofnaples.com. I have only been on the site for a minute or so when a drop down chat window appears and I’m welcomed and invited to chat with the sales manager. I ask a few question, exchange a few pleasantries and then confess my unwillingness to spend any more than 20 minutes at his dealership. He assures me that he can have me in and out in 20 minutes and asks me to stop by that afternoon.
Now here’s the best part: The lovely but somewhat hesitate shopper, Joy Ann, and I go to the dealership and in less than 20 minutes have closed the deal and are ready to leave the lot in our brand new white Volkswagen Passat with bluetooth connectivity. It was the best shopping experience I’ve ever had. I don’t know if it is Volkswagen, the local Naples VW dealership or economic recession that has turned a once dreaded transaction into a pleasant excursion. Hooray!
We work everyday to make your 2 way radio shopping experience a pleasure. Let us help you find the best 2 way radio equipment for your application. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.

My birthday was on Saturday. I was born on October 20th 1946. I am 66 years old. I don’t know them but Tom Petty and Snoop Dog both have the same birthday as me. Different years of course, Tom Petty is only 62 years old and Snoop just celebrated his 40th birthday. They say that Snoop Dog is the most famous person with an October 20th birthday.
The website www.famousbirthdays.com not only lists the birthdays of famous people but ranks them in order of who is the most popular. According to the website James Chadwick (Nobel laureate for physics for the discovery of the neutron) is the least popular of the famous people born on October 20th. Mickey Mantle is the third most popular. Either the importance of your work has little to do with popularity or maybe the difficulty of your work has little to do with popularity. I never heard of James Chadwick till this morning when I visited the website. I am sure Chadwick slaved away for years studying and researching before making his discovery. Mickey Mantle, on the other hand, was outside playing ball and drinking beers after the game. Doesn’t seem fair.
I also share my birthday with Dr. Joyce Brothers, Art Buckwald, Jelly Roll Morton, Jerry Orbach and Keith Hernandez. Even though we were all born under the same astrological libra sign I can’t say that I feel any kinship with any of these folks.
A famous name is a kin to a brand name. Popular brand names like French’s Mustard do not necessarily mean it is the best mustard. Although I have to say that when it comes to a hot dog you can keep your Grey Poupon or Gulden’s Spicy Brown and give me French’s. A corndog would hardly be recognizable without French’s.
I like to think that 2 Way Radio Express is both a famous name and the most appropriate name when it comes to 2 way radios. We want to help you find the best two way radios for your application. Give us a call. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.

We recently added a new 2 way radio to our inventory. The new radio is a TecNet TP-8000 waterproof radio. The TecNet TP-8000 waterproof radio is made in Korea. Like the Japanese the Koreans are legendary for their electronics. Unfortunately most electronics are made in China. The Chinese are better known for their noodles.
TecNet is a distribution company. The actual company that manufactures the TecNet TP-8000 is Unimo. Unimo is a large manufacturer and makes equipment that is sold under several brand names. Unimo makes excellent equipment.
We are dealers for several radio equipment companies. ICOM, Tekk International, Ritron and Motorola are the principle companies we represent. All of these companies tend to name their products with numbers. The TecNet TP-8000 waterproof radio is an obvious example.
The TecNet TP-8000 waterproof radio is a fabulous product. It is world class in every regard except … the name. I don’t think the product would be any less if it were called the TP-7000 or even the TP-22. The problem is the name does not fairly describe the product.
We sell an ICOM radio that ICOM has named the ICOM F-4001. ICOM is the brand and F-4001 is the model. Dealers all over the county sell this radio as the ICOM F-4001. We sell the same radio however we call it the ICOM Mini. We call it the Mini because it is small but just as durable and full featured as larger radios. We believe the ICOM Mini is a better name. We think our name is more descriptive and easier to remember.
A few of the radios we sell we have re-named the Cricket, the Lite, the Traveler and so on. We think we can do better than the TecNet TP-8000 waterproof radio.
We are going to re-name the radio something that is easier to remember and more descriptive. Some of names we are considering … the Otter, the Frog and the Pompano. As you can see we have some way to go before we find the best name.
Do you want to help? Feel free to send us your choice for a new name. If you like you can visit You Tube for a short video demonstrating the durability of the TecNet TP-8000 waterproof radio.

I ride my bicycle just about everyday. Our office is only a few steps from my home. Riding the bicycle to work would make no sense at all…it’s too close.
My morning ride is usually through the neighborhood, down to the beach, through Venetian Village and back home. It is a six and half mile ride. I look forward to and miss it when rain or some other distraction prevents me from riding.
My bicycle is a Trek Pure Sport. It is a great bike. New the bike cost about $400. Four hundred dollars is not a lot of money for a bicycle today. But for me $400 is more than the total I have spend all the bicycle I have ever owned. I love my bike.
The thing I like most about my bicycle is the way the seat and pedals are situated. The Trek Pure is a pedal forward bike. On most bikes the pedals are directly below the seat. On the Trek the pedals are about 10 inches forward. This allows the rider to sit upright. Sitting upright with the pedals slightly forward means there is no strain on my back and I am using more of my leg muscles than what I would on an ordinary bicycle.
My bicycle was made in China but it is of excellent quality. Generally I do not like Chinese made stuff but the Trek bicycles are an exception. The Chinese are known for faulty drywall, lead painted toys, tainted dog food and a bunch of other problematic products but not my Trek Pure Sport.
My Trek bike pedals and shifts smooth. I have over three thousand miles on my bike. When I tell people I have traveled over 3000 miles on my bicycle they look at me as if I were some kind of kook.
If you haven’t ridden a bicycle in a while I highly recommend it.

Water proof 2 way radios can be submersed in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes without being damaged. Unfortunately water proof radios have been expensive…up till now.
Introducing the Tec Net TP-8000 Submersible 2 way radio. Tec Net is the brand. TP-8000 is the model. The Tec Net TP-8000 comes in either VHF or UHF versions. It is full powered and narrow band compliant. It is equipped with a long life 15 hour duty cycle Lithium Ion battery and rapid rate charger.
The Tec Net TP-8000 is compact and lightweight. It weighs just 9.1 ounces. It is 4.37 inches X 2 inches X 1.25 inches. It has a relative ease of carry (EOC) of 9.9. The TP-8000 is equipped with advanced signaling and comes with Inversion Voice Scrambling at no extra cost.
The great part about a submersible radio (beside the obvious that it can withstand being submersed) is the build quality necessary to attain the waterproof rating. It is not only water proof but it is also dust proof. It is ideal for use in a concrete plant or anywhere that dust is an issue.
Most waterproof 2 way radios with these features sell for over $500. We sell the Tec Net TP-8000 for $329 including UPS delivery, all programming and a manufacturers 3 year warranty on radio and battery.
During our introductory offer buy the Tec Net TP-8000 for just $299 each.
We can program the TP-8000 to work seamlessly with your existing radios. Give us a call to learn more or order your Fully Submersible TP-8000 radios today. Call us at 239-601-1969. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.

When I was a kid ketchup was my favorite condiment. Ketchup was king. Ketchup had a spicy tang. Ketchup came in glass bottle. Ketchup was at least as good and usually better than whatever I put it on. (The notable except is a cheeseburger where the cheese is at least as good as the ketchup. That’s why cheese has its own food group.)
Today ketchup comes in a plastic bottle. It is sweet not spicy. It looks the same as it always has but it tastes different. I suspect it is in part because of the tomatoes they use. All the good stuff has been engineered out of today’s tomatoes.
Food is engineered for improved shelf life, resistance to insects and drought, bruising, size, growth cycle, ease of harvest and everything else except flavor. In some cases our bodies do not recognize the engineered food as food. Our bodies store these foods because our bodies can’t process this non food and bingo-bango all of us are 20 pounds heavier.
A notable except is the newly introduced Sweet Tango apples. Sweet Tango apples are the best apples ever. They are firm, sweet and juicy. I am guessing they were named Sweet Tango because they are so good they make you feel like dancing.
Quite the opposite, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, tomatoes are terrible. And because tomatoes are terrible; ketchup is no longer anybody over the age of 8’s favorite condiment.
Yesterday all of us here at 2 Way Radio Express were lunching together. The feature was sausage. Mild Italian sausage. Our condiment of choice was Gulden’s Spicy Brown Mustard. French’s Yellow Mustard is also a good choice with a distinct flavor but yesterday we were all caught up in the Gulden’s experience. I probably would prefer French’s Yellow Mustard on a hot dog but for Italian sausage Gulden’s was the perfect match.
Knowing the right condiment to use in every situation is very empowering.

The TV show “60 Minutes” is on Sunday nights, usually just after a football game. It is the spontaneous rave of TV because you never really know when it is going to be on.
Last night we were channel surfing and came upon “60 Minutes.” The story we caught was “Rodriguez the Sugar Man.” Rodriguez is Sixto Rodriguez and is a Detroit, Michigan folksinger that was born in 1942.
Rodriguez recorded a couple of albums back in the late sixties that were commercial flops. The music was cheered by critics but the albums did not sell. So Rodriguez spends the next 40 years working as a day laborer. He manages to get a degree in philosophy and have a family but he never rises above poverty.
Meanwhile in South Africa, Rodriguez and his music are more popular than the Beatles. People in South Africa believe a rumor that Rodriguez has been dead for years. They believe he committed suicide by setting himself on fire while on stage during a concert. He is a folk hero. Everyone knows and loves his music. His albums are selling like crazy in South Africa but Rodriguez is clueless to his popularity and hasn’t receive a penny for the record sales.
Twenty five years go by and some of Rodriguez’s fans learn he is still alive and invite him to South Africa to perform. When he arrives he believes someone important must be at the airport because there is a limousine. He is shocked to learn the limo is for him. He is even more shocked when thousands rather than dozens show up for his performance. He didn’t realize they considered his appearance not just a surprise but a miracle. He was the sound track of their lives. He is Lazarus.
Meanwhile in Sweden there is a young filmmaker looking for a story to make his first film. His name is Malik Bendjelloul. He hears about Rodriguez and without any resources he begins making a movie using only his cell phone as a camera.
Could this story get any more bizarre. Yes! The Sundance Film Festival chooses the film for an award and now the film is being considered for an Academy Award. (Even though the film is currently being shown it is only 90% complete according to Malik.)
Meanwhile back in Detroit Rodriguez is still as humble as ever claiming poverty doesn’t equal a lack of dignity. What a story!
