We have been watching “The Pitch” season 1 reruns. The Pitch is a AMC television show that takes cameras behind the closed doors of the world of advertising as two advertising agencies compete to win a real campaign from a major brand.
The show’s premise is that each agency has only one week to prepare their presentation or “Pitch.” The show tells us that careers can be won or lost based on a single Pitch.
The show is generally entertaining, engaging and insightful. We have enjoyed watching the reruns and will probably watch the upcoming season. In spite of our enjoyment we tend to disagree with the premise and the outcome of the show.
The premise indicates a single pitch determining an advertisers fate. We think business is a long term project with a million twists and turns. One big sale seldom brings continuing success. Consider the fate of one hit wonders: musical or otherwise. We believe long term success is on ongoing process.
I hope we don’t seem argumentative but we also tend to disagree with the outcome of the shows we have seen.
For example, one of the shows had two agencies fighting for a contract to represent Waste Management. The folks at Waste Management instructed that through their efforts of recycling the world is a better place and more energy efficient. Waste Management wanted their story told to the world through a series of advertisements. The agency that won did so with a campaign of “Turning Waste Into WoW”. “Turning Waste Into Wow” seems like just a cutesy slogan. As a slogan it doesn’t seem to have much depth.
The losing advertising firm offered, “Trash Can” as their campaign. We thought “Trash Can” is a play on words but more importantly tells a story. The story is trash can be converted into usable energy that can heat homes and businesses. Trash can be recycled into new products. Trash can be used to generate electricity. Trash can…. and on and on.
“Trash Can” seemed like the real deal….”Turning Trash Into Wow” just seem like a gimmick.
