My High School Reunion

Monday, May 4th, 2015

Hi Friends,

The insightful JoyAnn has a talent for predicting someone’s age based only on their name. For example if your name is Betty, Judy or Martha, my JoyAnn would predict you are over sixty years old. She is much better at this than I am presented here but she is not around at the moment to give me more examples.

I’m sixty eight years old and this is the year of my 50th high school reunion. Facebook has changed everything about finding old classmates. As the reunion date edges closer I am seeing more and more friend requests from Bettys, Toms and Dougs.

There was a Danny in my class who has been located and contacted for the reunion. All the Joeys, Dannys, Billys and Bobbys have dropped the “y” from their name are now straight up Joes, Dans, Bills and Bobs.

One day, fifty years ago at our high school assembly, the recently located Danny was sitting in the row just in front of me. He was eating an apple. The thing that was memorable; after he finished eating the regular part of the apple he just kept going. He ate the core. He ate the seeds. He ate the whole apple. If there was a stem and a leaf he would have eaten those. I had never seen anyone eat and entire apple. A horse would eat a whole apple but not a high school student.

Danny was Jewish. Danny may have been the only Jewish person in our school. I never paid much attention to the Jewish faith but Danny would often declare he was Jewish. I didn’t know anything about Jewish people. I was raised Catholic and had my own problems understanding my church.

Knowing Danny was Jewish and seeing him eat the entire apple somehow got linked together. Now as our high school reunion approaches I think of Danny eating the entire apple and wonder if he still practices his Jewish faith.

Love Is Not Possession

Friday, April 17th, 2015

Hi Friend,

I live in Naples, Florida. They say more Fortune 500 CEO’s have homes in Naples than anywhere else. I don’t know if that is true but there are certainly a lot of big houses and fancy cars around town….not to mention some great restaurants.

I love to drive down Gulf Shore Drive and gawk at the mansions. The elegant and refined  Joy Ann thinks of me as a total goober because I get so much enjoyment from rubber necking through the fancy neighborhoods.

These big estates are buttoned down most of the time. The storm shutters are closed  and only the staff remains on the premises. The rich and famous that own these houses must be too busy to enjoy them.

It is funny to think I get more enjoyment from their homes than they do.

Naples is loaded with Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari automobiles. Seldom will I not see one of these fabulous cars even on just a short trip to the grocery.

I really enjoy seeing these cars but I’m not interested in owning one. Too much car for too little use.

Naples is supposedly ranked #3 in the country for having the most Five Star restaurants. Only New York and San Francisco have more Five Star eateries.

My favorite local restaurant is Pincher’s Crab Shack. I don’t think Pincher’s has ever been reviewed but the seafood is exceptionally fresh, the service is friendly, draft beer is always 2 for 1 and I can wear flip flops when we go there.

I appreciate fine dining and consider myself a bit of a food snob but I also appreciate value and it is hard for me to enjoy a meal that is priced based mostly on it’s exclusivity.

I may have to buy a ticket to hear the band play but I don’t need to own a big house or a fancy car to enjoy them.

Michael Jackson was right. “Love is not possession.”

Two way radios increase safety, efficiency and productivity. Two way radios are affordable and will actually pay for themselves in just a few weeks. Let us help you enjoy the benefits of 2 way radios. Give us a call today. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.

How Does It Feel To Be On Your Own?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

Hi Friends,

I listen to Pandora (the internet radio station) while I exercise. I usually walk every other day and ride my bicycle every other day. Listening to music makes exercising more enjoyable and the time passes more quickly.

Pandora let’s you choose the music you want to hear. For example, the Hall and Oates station features Hall and Oates recordings but also plays songs from Boz Skaggs, Steve Miller and Steely Dan. The assumption is: if you like Hall and Oates you probably like Skaggs, Miller and Steely Dan.

Yesterday morning I listened to the Bob Dylan station.  I forgot how many great songs Bob wrote. The station also played a couple of Neil Young songs but uncharacteristically the Bob Dylan station played almost nothing but Bob Dylan. I had never heard Bob Dylan’s song “Things Have Changed.”

Since yesterday morning I have listened to “Things Have Changed” a thousand times. Bob’s music is addictive. HIs lyrics are so conversational. “Yesterday morning I listened to the Bob Dylan station” sounds like a line out of one his songs.

Isn’t it great when you re-discover something you use to like and find that you still like it just as much.

A few years ago Bob Dylan was arrested by a 22 year old policewoman in Long Branch, New Jersey. Bob was in Long Branch to perform at the Ocean Place Resort with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. Before the concert Bob was walking by himself several blocks away from his hotel.  It was raining.

The policewoman that picked up Dylan thought he was an eccentric old man wandering the streets in the rain. She demanded to see his identification. He wasn’t carrying a wallet or any ID. He told her he was Bob Dylan but she didn’t put the name with the face. Bob had foreseen this coming many years earlier when he wrote “How does it feel to be on your own, a complete unknown?”

Of course when she called into the police station the older officers suggested she ask for his autograph rather than his ID.

Two way radios are an old favorite. In the big boom-boom of cell phone you may have forgotten about walkie talkies. If you haven’t used radios lately or if you have never used two way radios I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprise by the improved safety, efficiency and productivity that 2 way radios provide.

Neck Deep In March Madness

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

Hi Friends,

Are you a college basketball fan? Are you neck deep in March Madness?

As a graduate of the University of Kentucky I am filled with pride for my alma mater. I was on campus during Adolph Rupp’s tenure and applauded when Joe B. Hall moved from assistant to head coach.

Coach Rupp is said to have invented the full court press. I believe Kentucky was playing Michigan when Rupp told his players to try to deny the inbound pass and if that failed to try to take the ball away from the Michigan players as they moved down the floor. Michigan was totally flummoxed and could not understand why the Kentucky players were interfering with the game.

If you haven’t been following hoops allow me to share the excitement that the University of Kentucky is undefeated this season as it heads for the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament.

An undefeated season has only happened a few times in collegiate basketball history. This is huge. This is bigger than the three point shot or the 35 second shot clock. Well maybe not bigger but certainly as big.

Kentucky’s current coach is John Calipari. Coach Calipari is paid $6.5 million per year plus bonuses. You can imagine that the university is expecting big things from the coach.

Here’s the part that is fascinating…Coach Calipari has not invented or introduced any super duper razzle dazzle plays. He has great players but his advice and coaching are clear and simple.

Play your best!

Coach Calipari told his team, “I don’t care if we win. I only care that we play our best.”

The people that are paying him $6.5 million care whether or not they win. I suspect those folks are probably going to look at the outcome of the tournament before offering a bonus.

College basketball is the best!

Dog Years

Thursday, March 5th, 2015

Hi Friends,

When I was a little boy our family dog was a beagle named Sandy. When I was a little boy Lassie was a regular TV show. Our dog was no Lassie.

Sandy nearly hung herself. This was back when folks dried their clothes on outdoor clotheslines. Normally timid, Sandy attacked a towel that was blowing in the wind on our clothesline. Somehow she got a tooth stuck in the fabric and acting like a sail the towel propelled Sandy skyward. Fortunately she hung on rather than sailing across the lawn. Unfortunately she became enmeshed in the towel and would have hung herself had my brother and I not rescued her.

Sandy’s other noteworthy adventure came about when our house was being painted. Everyday the painters enjoyed lunch under a big oak tree in our yard. The painters would give Sandy whatever scraps were left from their lunch. In an experiment, the painters determined Sandy would eagerly eat one or two Oreo cookies. About the third or fourth cookie Sandy’s enthusiasm would begin to loose steam for the cream filled treats. By the time she ate a fifth cookie she was choking. Ever the pioneer Sandy still returned for lunch the every day the painters were on the premises.

A dog can really cram a lot of living into every day…. 3 or 4 naps, several hiking trips, inspection tours around the yard, multiple meals and so on. Because dogs only live 10 years or so, people say each dog year is equal to 7 people years.

Radios have a substantial mission of improving safety, efficiency and productivity everyday. Radios take a beating and still perform. Hot, cold, damp you name it radios are reliable in all conditions. Radios get tossed around and used 24/7. Really a year in a radio’s life is like a year in a dog’s life. Radios only last about 10 years, so you could say a radio year is worth 7 people years.

Let us help you find the best 2 way radio equipment for your application and budget. Call us today at 239-601-1969. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.

A Flicker of Love

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Hi Friends,

Mondegreen is an odd word that means the mishearing of a phrase or the lyrics to a song. Over the years as my attention span and hearing have faded a little bit I am experiencing mondegreens on an increasing basis.

For example, there is a song that has the line “a flicker of love.” What I hear is, “the Vicar of love.” A Vicar is a religous leader. I think using the phrase ‘a Vicar of Love’ is cool. Maybe not correct but cool nonetheless. ‘Vicar of love’ is a mondegreen.

Perhaps your wife says, “Can you take the garbage out?” but you hear “You sure are getting stout.”  You can see how mondegreens can create problems out of thin air.

We sell a product called the “Loudmouth.” The manufacturer is Ritron and they came up with the name. I can’t think of a mondegreen for Loudmouth but I can understand how some people might think the name is coarse or somewhat offensive.

Usually we think of a loudmouth as someone who talks too much and says too little. Ritron’s Loudmouth is the opposite.

Loud Mouth is a wireless product that let’s you talk over your existing pubic address system with a 2 way radio. The school principal or factory security officer doesn’t need to be in his or her office to make an announcement. They simply turn their radio to a specific channel and they have immediate access to the campus PA system.

PA systems can be enlarged to include remote areas of a campus or any facility by adding very affordable wireless speakers. Because it is a wireless system there is no trenching and installation is quick and inexpensive.

If you do not have a PA system Loud Mouth is available as a complete PA system. Loud Mouth can make a huge difference in safety and efficiency.

Give us a call at 239-601-1969 to learn more about how Loud Mouth can work at your campus or facility. Doing business with 2 Way Radio Express is easy.

Today’s Vocabulary Word

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

Hi Friends,

The multi talented Joy Ann has cut my hair for more than 10 years. It is cool getting your hair cut at home. No waiting line. No nasty old barber shop. No grumpy old barber and best of all no $15 price tag (plus $2 or $3 tip).

There are some disadvantages. For example, about the same time Joy Ann started cutting my hair I started wearing a telephone headset at work. Where the headset rests on the top of my head it causes my hair to stick up creating a cone. It is kind of like a mohawk or a rooster comb. A rooster comb is that thing that sticks up on a rooster’s head. Not that I am comparing myself to a rooster.

It is not a big deal but I have asked the sensitive Joy Ann to be careful when she is cutting that part of my hair. I have always believed that with a little more care the “cone”   caused by the headset would not be so noticeable.  The ever instructive Joy Ann has pointed out if I flattened my hair before I put on my headset there wouldn’t be a cone. I have been careful not to rebut her suggestion. You do not want your barber looking for retribution.

More recently I started going back to a regular barber. I found Jake at a nearby shop. Jake charges $14 and I still have the cone. Joy Ann is over cutting my hair but she is not over smirking when Jake’s hair cut did nothing to tame the wild and ever present cone. Today’s vocabulary word is “vindication.”

For some untold reason I have recently started parting my hair on the side. I use to brush it straight back.

Yesterday Joy Ann and I were standing outside around sunset. Holding hands with the sun at our backs our shadows stretched across the patio in front of us and in unison we noticed my shadow didn’t have a cone. For the first time in years I was without the cone. This changes everything!

You can change everything too with crystal clear 2 way radio communications.  Let us help you with your 2 way radio issues. We have helped hundreds of schools and business in all 50 states get the most of out of their 2 way radios. Call 2 Way Radio Express today at 239-601-1969.

The Holy Grail of Audio Accessories

Friday, January 16th, 2015

Hi Friends,

I ride my bike most every day. I live a couple of blocks from the beach and I ride through the neighborhood down to the key and back to complete a circuit of 6.5 miles. Living in Florida lets me ride all year long.

Seldom does a week go by that I don’t notice a TV on the curb waiting for the recycle truck to come by. The TV’s I see are usually the huge box kind that were popular before flat screens were introduced. Many times people post signs announcing “TV Works Good.”

In the good old USA I suspect only 6 or 7 TV’s actually go bad in any year. The rest are thrown out because they are too big, or too small, or too thick. Electronics seem to last forever.

The real danger for electronics are flowing water and dirt. As noted by Jerry Seinfeld, “If you’ve got a t-shirt with blood stains all over it maybe laundry isn’t your biggest problem right now.” If you are concerned about large amounts of water and dirt at your house or apartment you probably have bigger issues than TV picture quality.

Walkie talkies like TV’s are electronic equipment. Many of our customers are using radios they purchased more than 5 years ago and in some cases more than 10 years ago.

Two way radios don’t really go out of style. They have gotten smaller and most are using better batteries but fundamentally a 10 year old radio isn’t much different from a new radio.

So how do you keep a radio in tip top shape so it won’t fall harm to the perils of life? Two words, Ben. Audio accessories. Whether you are using a speaker mic or an earpiece, audio accessories let you leave the radio attached to your belt or waist band while you send and receive messages.

Because your radio stays attached to your belt there is less chance of dropping, or loosing or any number of other dangers to radio life. Audio Accessories are the holy grail of radio longevity. It is much better to wear out a $60 speaker mic than loose or drop a $300 radio into a toilet.

Give us a call. We offer a fabulous choice of audio accessories for every make and model two way radio. At 2 Way Radio Express we offer heavy duty accessories that come with a full 3 year warranty. Call us today at 239-601-1969 and let us help you save the life of your radios.

I Love Bread

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

Hi Friends,

I love bread. I especially love french or Italian baguette. The best bread is the simplest. The simplest bread has the few ingredients. Few ingredients means no preservatives. Baguettes usually have a one meal life expectancy. If you don’t consume the whole loaf it pretty much turns to stone by morning. But wait! I saw this tip from Sarah Moulton yesterday. Sarah runs cold water over the hard bread. Then wraps the baguette tightly in foil and puts it in a cold oven. Turns the oven on 300 degrees and heats the bread for 12 – 15 minutes. Remove the bread from the foil and continues heating the bread for 5 minutes. Woohoo! It is a fresh baguette.

Maybe you have some old radios that need batteries or fresh accessories. Give us a call at 239-601-1969. We can bring your old radios back to life.

God Bless You Johnny Bench

Monday, January 5th, 2015

Hi Friends,

Nearly a year ago, the health conscious Joy Ann injured a leg muscle. Since that time her discomfort has eased and surged but has been consistently present. She describes the injury as inflammation and has tried all sorts of remedies.

Aspirin blocks the pain but is only temporary and has its own side effects. Heat treatments and ice pack treatments offer a little relief but are only practical when she is home. She has made dramatic changes in her diet to address the issues of inflammation but hasn’t gotten the comfort she is seeking.

Shortly before Christmas we were at the grocery store. We stopped in the healthcare aisle. We were considering the merits of pain relief ointments the likes of Ben Gay and  Absorbine Jr when what to our wandering eye did we find but Blue Emu.

We did not know anything about Blue Emu except we had seen Johnny Bench (the retired Cincinnati Reds ball player) on television as the spokesperson for this product.

Blue Emu comes in a small jar and sells for less than $6. The directions were simply rub some into the affected area. There were no side effects.

Two things happened: Blue Emu works and the effectiveness is so dramatic it has captured our interest in researching its other uses.

Blue Emu is a brand and is a specific formula of emu oil and other ingredients for pain relief. Emu oil is offered by other companies in other formulation for other uses.

Montana Emu Ranch offers 100% pure emu oil that can be used to treat burns, insect bites, acne and a host of other ailments. This stuff works.

I love it when a product does what it says it will do. If it had not been for Johnny Bench we wouldn’t know. God bless you Johnny Bench.

Two way radios work. Two way radios increase safety, boost efficiency and improve productivity in schools, businesses and government agencies. Dentist offices use 2 way radios. Factories use 2 way radios. Veterinarians and animal clinics use 2 way radios.
